Plant A TreeHow to plant a tree

  1. Site Preparation/Irrigation - The single most common cause of tree death is poor site preparation and lack of water. If no irrigation exists, hand fill prepared holes with water. Dry conditions around newly planted trees will pull water away and out of its root system causing it to quickly dry out and die.

  2. Hole Preparation - Dig hole so that the width is minimum of 1.5 - 2.0 times the width of the container. Depth of the hole should allow top of rootball to 2" - 3" above natural grade.

  3. Removal of Container - Remove side of box pull tree out of pull tree out of plastic container. Pick up tree under rootball with forklift set in middle of hole.

  4. Scarify Roots - Slice sides of rootball in 3 or 4 locations and cut large roots to avoid the possibility of future root girdling.

  5. Back Fill - It is recommended, if soils permit, to use the same soil removed from hole to backfill. Using this soil allows for successful root transition into new soil. Water in while backfilling to eliminate air pockets.

  6. Build mote around planting hole to hold water during establishment period.

  7. Fertilize - Top dress root system with starter tree fertilizer at manufacturer's recommended rate.

  8. Mulch - Immediately apply a 2" to 4" layer of mulch over the root system to assure roots do not dry out. Do not place mulch in direct contract with the tree trunk.

  9. Stake tree securely to eliminate blowing over during establishment period.

  10. Prune out broken branches from shipping and handling.
